Integration of heterogeneous databases
 ne of the aims of AVANTI is to open the way toward a clean integration of different multimedia databases on the Internet into a homogeneous environment and to define a common way to find and retrieve the data.
Two key aspects have been developed in order to achieve this goal:
- A general model of information, the Content Model, extends the ordinary concept of a database to encompass accessory concepts such as adaptation, multilingual and multimedia information;
- A general Information Gateway , the MDI, which hides the different database structures and supports the retrieval of information using a common approach.
