The User Model Server

user modelling component is utilised in AVANTI to provide the required support for user oriented adaptations. The User Model Server (UMS) offers location - independent access to user - related information to any interested component (in AVANTI, the user interface and the content adaptivity modules). It employs a set of stereotypes that store categorised knowledge about the users their interactions and environment, and a set of rules, programmed into it, to draw inferences on the current state of the user (making assumptions about the experience, abilities and needs of the user). A record of the user's interactions and information on the environment of use are maintained in the usage model sub-component. The UMS co-operates with the user interface module, which monitors the user and reports the user actions back to the UMS.
